Week 1 milestone: start, use, shut down

Practical

~20 min

This is the week's checkpoint. There is no grade and no time limit — only "done confidently" or "let's practice a bit more and try again." Retrying is completely normal and expected.

Show your instructor, without help:

  1. Turn on the computer and log in.
  2. Use the mouse to find a program icon on the desktop and open it (double click).
  3. Close the program (click the X in its top-right corner).
  4. Shut down properly: Start button → power symbol → Shut down.

While you work, your instructor may ask:

  • "Point to the monitor / the power button / a port."
  • "Which button is the left mouse button?"
  • "Why don't we switch off at the wall?"

Passed?

Wonderful — you can now do something millions of people once found scary. Add this week's cheat sheets to your binder; next week starts with a quick replay of exactly these steps, and then we meet the keyboard.
